The Columbus community is grieving following a heartbreaking tragedy that claimed the lives of 33-year-old Shalimar Green and her 11-year-old daughter, Aliv’eyah Chandler, inside their East Side home Wednesday evening, while police identified Shalimar’s husband, 33-year-old Derrick Green, as the suspect in the devastating killings. The heartbreaking loss has left family members, friends, classmates, and neighbors in shock as authorities continue investigating what police have described as a domestic-related double homicide.
According to the Columbus Police Department, officers responded to a well-being check around 7:10 p.m. at a residence in the 2900 block of Chatsworth Way. Before first responders arrived, a relative discovered Shalimar Green and young Aliv’eyah Chandler deceased inside the home. The heartbreaking scene immediately prompted a homicide investigation as detectives worked late into the night gathering evidence and searching for answers.
Court documents revealed that both mother and daughter suffered gunshot wounds as well as stab wounds. Investigators reportedly found spent shell casings and a bloody knife at the scene, painting a horrifying picture of the violence that unfolded inside the family home. Authorities later identified 33-year-old Derrick Green, Shalimar’s husband, as the primary suspect in the killings.
Police said Derrick Green fled the residence when officers arrived, leading to a search that ended later Wednesday night when SWAT officers took him into custody without incident. He has since been charged with murder. Officials stated the tragic incident stemmed from a domestic dispute, though investigators continue working to determine the full sequence of events leading up to the deaths of Shalimar and Aliv’eyah.
The tragedy has especially shaken the Groveport Madison school community, where Aliv’eyah Chandler was a student. Classmates, teachers, and loved ones are now mourning the loss of a young girl whose life was cut tragically short far too soon. Friends and family members remember Aliv’eyah as a bright child with a future filled with promise, while Shalimar is being remembered as a loving mother whose world revolved around her daughter.
As the investigation unfolds, many are also reflecting on Derrick Green’s prior legal history. Court records show Green was previously arrested in connection with the 2021 shooting death of 31-year-old Kenneth Palmer during a New Year’s party. Although Green posted a $100,000 bond and a grand jury later returned a “no bill,” meaning prosecutors did not have sufficient evidence to move forward with the case, the previous arrest has resurfaced amid the latest allegations.
The deaths of Shalimar Green and Aliv’eyah Chandler have once again highlighted the devastating impact domestic violence can have on families and entire communities. Neighbors in the area described the incident as unimaginable and heartbreaking, with many expressing disbelief that such violence could occur so close to home.
As loved ones prepare to mourn two precious lives lost, the community continues offering prayers, condolences, and support to grieving relatives and friends facing an unimaginable pain. The memories of Shalimar Green and Aliv’eyah Chandler will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved them, while the tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the importance of recognizing and addressing domestic violence before lives are lost.
