COLUMBUS, Ohio — A heartbreaking tragedy has left a community grieving after a mother and young child lost their lives in a devastating act of violence inside an east Columbus home Wednesday evening.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers were called to a residence in the 2000 block of Chatsworth Way around 7:15 p.m. for a well-being check involving 33-year-old Shalimar Green and 11-year-old Aliv’eyah Chandler.
Before officers arrived, a concerned relative entered the home and made the unimaginable discovery. Shalimar and Aliv’eyah were found unresponsive inside the residence. Medics responded to the scene, but both were tragically pronounced dead.
Court records from Franklin County Municipal Court state that both victims suffered gunshot and stab wounds. Investigators believe the two were mother and daughter, making the loss even more heartbreaking for everyone affected.
Authorities later identified 35-year-old Derrick Green as the suspect. Police say Shalimar Green and Derrick Green were involved in an ongoing domestic dispute and were in the process of ending their relationship before the tragedy unfolded. Investigators gathered evidence at the scene that led to Derrick Green being identified as the suspect in both deaths. He reportedly fled the residence before officers arrived.
SWAT officers later located Derrick Green and took him into custody without incident. He has since been charged with murder.
As this case continues moving through the legal process, one painful truth remains: two precious lives were taken far too soon.
