OMAHA, Neb. — The Omaha Police Department has released the names of the officers involved in the fatal officer-involved shooting that claimed the life of 55-year-old Matthew Strain on June 3. The officers identified were Sgt. Sergio Gutierrez, Officer Trevor Shoemaker, Officer Tyler Anderson, Officer Lukas Brazier, and Officer Jaime Desautels, all of whom have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy while the investigation continues.
The incident began around 8:45 a.m. near 19th and Bancroft Streets after officers responded to a disturbance involving a landlord and a tenant at a residence. According to investigators, Matthew Strain had been served an informal eviction notice approximately 30 days earlier and was expected to vacate the property by June 1. However, authorities say the situation escalated before he left the residence.
Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said officers attempting to resolve the disturbance encountered resistance when Strain allegedly refused to leave his room and threatened to shoot anyone who attempted to enter. Concerned for the safety of everyone inside the residence, officers worked to safely remove the other landlord from the home.
Police also received information indicating that Strain might be armed with an AR-15-style rifle and a shotgun. Because of the reported threats and the potential danger posed by the weapons, officers secured the scene and called in specialized resources to manage the incident.
Negotiators spent several hours attempting to peacefully resolve the standoff. According to investigators, negotiations formally began around 3:00 p.m., with officers working to convince Strain to surrender without further incident. During those discussions, police said Strain claimed he had a stockpile of firearms and ammunition inside the residence and threatened to shoot responding officers if they attempted to enter.
As the standoff continued, investigators obtained a warrant charging Strain with terroristic threats. Authorities determined that additional action was necessary after negotiations failed to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion.
At approximately 4:00 p.m., members of the Omaha Police Department’s SWAT team breached the residence in an effort to execute the warrant. Police said that as officers entered the home, Strain opened fire on the SWAT team. Four members of the team responded, with two officers using lethal force while two others deployed chemical munitions during the encounter.
Matthew Strain was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that no officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire.
Following the incident, the Omaha Police Department identified the officers involved as Sgt. Sergio Gutierrez, a 14-year veteran of the department; Officer Trevor Shoemaker, who has served for eight years; Officer Tyler Anderson, with 11 years of service; Officer Lukas Brazier, also with 11 years of service; and Officer Jaime Desautels, who has served the department for 17 and a half years. Consistent with department policy, each officer has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation proceeds.
The shooting remains under investigation. In accordance with Nebraska law, once investigators complete their work, the case will be presented to a grand jury for an independent review of the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
The incident has drawn significant attention within the Omaha community as investigators continue gathering evidence and reviewing the actions taken throughout the lengthy standoff. Authorities have pledged a thorough and transparent investigation, and additional details are expected to be released as the legal process moves forward.
