The Fort Smith community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 20-year-old Taylor Jackson Roebuck, who tragically drowned Wednesday following a search and rescue operation at Bluff Hole Park in Mulberry, Arkansas.
According to Mulberry Police Chief Shannon Gregory, officers were called to the area after reports of two people possibly in danger in the water. When first responders arrived at Bluff Hole Park, they quickly determined that one individual was in distress after a swimming incident in the Mulberry River. Despite immediate response efforts, the situation quickly escalated into a recovery operation as crews worked to locate the missing man.
Authorities later confirmed that Taylor Roebuck had been swimming with his brother and friends when he began struggling while crossing the river. Although those with him immediately attempted to help, the current proved too strong, and he was unable to be rescued in time.
“We received a call about two people possibly drowning at Bluff Hole Park,” Chief Gregory said. “When officers arrived, they learned it was only one person who had drowned. We have first responders and divers here.”
Emergency crews, including dive teams and first responders, rushed to the scene as the area filled with concerned witnesses and friends who had been present during the incident. Despite courageous efforts from bystanders who attempted to assist, Roebuck was ultimately recovered too late.
Chief Gregory noted that Bluff Hole Park is a popular recreational area for families and swimmers, but emphasized that the Mulberry River can be unpredictable and dangerous. Officials reminded the public that conditions can change rapidly, and even strong swimmers can find themselves in life-threatening situations within seconds.
The family of Taylor Roebuck described him as a “good young man” with a vibrant personality and a passion for life. He is remembered for his love of 90s trucks, skateboarding, and riding his Schwinn and BMX bikes—simple joys that reflected his energetic and adventurous spirit.
Friends and loved ones are now left grieving a life taken far too soon, struggling to come to terms with the sudden and tragic loss. As the community mourns, many are reflecting on the importance of water safety and the unpredictable nature of natural waterways.
Officials confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the drowning remain under investigation.
Though his life ended tragically, Taylor Jackson Roebuck’s memory will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.
