Family, friends, and members of the Lane County community are mourning the tragic loss of John Michael Unrein, 46, of Springfield, who lost his life in a devastating three-vehicle crash on Highway 126 on Monday, June 15, 2026.
According to the Oregon State Police, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 3:53 p.m. near milepost 52 on Highway 126 in Lane County. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene following reports of a serious crash involving three vehicles.
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that John Michael Unrein was driving a red Mazda3 westbound on Highway 126 near Fisher Road when, for reasons that remain unknown, his vehicle crossed the center line and entered the eastbound lane of travel. The Mazda collided head-on with a white Chevrolet Equinox driven by 51-year-old Gina Mae Nix of Veneta.
The force of the collision caused the Chevrolet Equinox to roll over before coming to rest in the westbound lane. After the initial impact, the Mazda continued in the eastbound lane, where it was involved in a second head-on collision with a red Hyundai Elantra operated by 23-year-old Laura Valent Reales Gutierrez.
Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, John Michael Unrein was pronounced deceased at the scene. His passing marks a heartbreaking loss for his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Authorities reported that Gina Mae Nix and an adult passenger in the Chevrolet Equinox escaped the crash without injuries. Laura Valent Reales Gutierrez, the driver of the Hyundai Elantra, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The crash prompted a major response from emergency agencies and significantly impacted traffic along Highway 126. The roadway remained affected for approximately four hours while investigators conducted their on-scene examination and crews worked to clear the area.
The Oregon State Police were assisted by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Lane Fire Authority, the Lane County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation during the investigation and response efforts.
As investigators continue to work to determine what caused the Mazda to cross the center line, loved ones are left grieving the sudden and unexpected loss of John Michael Unrein. His death serves as a solemn reminder of how quickly lives can be changed in a single moment.
