The community is mourning the tragic loss of John Michael Unrein, 46, of Springfield, Oregon, who lost his life in a devastating three-vehicle crash on Highway 126 in Lane County on the afternoon of June 15, 2026.
According to the Oregon State Police, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 3:53 p.m. near milepost 52 on Highway 126. Authorities responded to the scene after receiving reports of a serious crash involving three vehicles. The incident would ultimately claim the life of John Michael Unrein and leave a lasting impact on all those involved.
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that Unrein was driving a red Mazda3 westbound on Highway 126 near Fisher Road when, for reasons that remain under investigation, his vehicle crossed the center line into oncoming traffic. The Mazda collided head-on with an eastbound white Chevrolet Equinox driven by 51-year-old Gina Mae Nix of Veneta. The force of the crash caused the Chevrolet to roll over before coming to rest in the westbound lane.
Following the initial collision, the Mazda continued into the eastbound lane where it struck a red Hyundai Elantra head-on. The Hyundai was being operated by 23-year-old Laura Valent Reales Gutierrez. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and immediately began life-saving efforts, but despite their best efforts, John Michael Unrein was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities reported that Gina Mae Nix and an adult passenger in the Chevrolet Equinox were not injured during the crash. Laura Valent Reales Gutierrez sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The tragic incident brought traffic along Highway 126 to a standstill for approximately four hours while investigators worked to document the scene and determine the circumstances that led to the collision. The Oregon State Police were assisted by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Lane Fire Authority, the Lane County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
