CARBONDALE — 32-year-old Marshaun Williams of Carbondale and 51-year-old Brent Battles of Radcliff, Kentucky, formerly of Carbondale, have been identified by authorities in connection with an early morning shooting Friday that left Williams dead and Battles hospitalized and in police custody as the investigation continues.
According to the Carbondale Police Department, officers responded at approximately 12:53 a.m. on June 19 to the 200 block of West Jackson Street after receiving reports of a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, officers located Marshaun Williams in a parking lot suffering from life-threatening gunshot injuries.
Williams was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel and responding officers performed lifesaving efforts. Despite those interventions, authorities confirmed that Williams later died from his injuries.
A second victim, Brent Battles, was also found suffering from gunshot wounds during the incident. Police said Battles, who previously resided in Carbondale and is now from Radcliff, Kentucky, is currently in stable condition while receiving medical care. He remains in police custody as the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office reviews the circumstances of the case and determines whether formal charges will be filed.
Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an ongoing personal dispute between Williams and Battles. At this time, law enforcement has stated that there is no indication of a broader threat to the public, and the incident appears to be isolated to those involved.
The Carbondale Police Department continues to investigate the sequence of events that led to the shooting, including what occurred prior to officers arriving on scene. Detectives are working to gather additional evidence and witness statements to fully understand how the confrontation escalated into violence.
Authorities are urging anyone with information, video footage, or firsthand accounts related to the incident to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
As the case develops, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of another fatal act of violence—one that claimed the life of Marshaun Williams and left Brent Battles facing both medical recovery and potential legal consequences.
