MIDLAND, TEXAS — Authorities have identified Victor Mata Villareal, 45, as the man responsible for a violent shooting spree that left Edward Scott, 64, dead and at least 10 others injured in a major attack across Midland. Officials say Villareal was later found deceased inside an abandoned building following the incident.
According to investigators, Villareal had previously been under scrutiny after allegedly opening fire on Midland police officers several days before Friday’s attack. No officers were struck or injured in that earlier incident. Authorities also confirmed he was facing attempted capital murder charges connected to those allegations.
A Violent Escalation
Investigators believe Friday’s mass shooting was part of a broader and escalating pattern of violence. Villareal allegedly opened fire in multiple locations, killing Edward Scott and injuring 10 other individuals before fleeing the scene.
Law enforcement sources say the suspect appeared to harbor a grievance against police, though officials have not formally confirmed a motive. They emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that conclusions will be based on evidence and forensic findings.
Police Response and Citywide Standoff
Following the shooting, officers launched a large-scale response and secured multiple areas as the situation unfolded. A standoff later developed in the west downtown area as law enforcement searched for the suspect.
The Texas Rangers have taken over the investigation and are working alongside local and federal agencies to reconstruct the full sequence of events and determine how the attack was carried out.
Suspect Found Dead
Authorities later located Villareal inside an abandoned building after an extensive search operation. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding his death, stating that the investigation is ongoing.
Community Impact
Among those killed was Edward Scott, identified by family members as a 64-year-old resident whose life was tragically cut short in the attack. His death has left loved ones devastated as they mourn an unexpected and violent loss.
Ten additional victims were injured and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their conditions have not all been publicly released.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities continue to urge patience as investigators work through evidence, witness statements, and surveillance footage to fully understand the timeline and motive behind the attack.
Officials have described the incident as complex and deeply troubling due to its multiple scenes and prior law enforcement involvement.
Community Response
As Midland processes the aftermath, residents are left dealing with grief, shock, and unanswered questions. Support efforts are now focused on victims, families, and first responders involved in the response.
Rest in peace, Edward Scott.
