The Cherokee County community is mourning the heartbreaking and tragic loss of 3-year-old Wyatt Van Childers of Gaffney, South Carolina, whose young life was cut short in a drowning accident Thursday afternoon. The devastating incident has left family members, friends, neighbors, and all who hear the story grieving the unimaginable loss of a precious little boy taken far too soon.
According to Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler, Wyatt was discovered in a small pond near his family home located on Childers Road in southeast Cherokee County. Authorities say the child had been napping inside the home earlier in the day. Around 5 p.m., Wyatt’s mother realized he was missing and immediately began searching for him with the help of family members.
During the frantic search, Wyatt was tragically found floating in a pond approximately 50 yards from the house. Family members rushed to save him, and an aunt pulled the little boy from the water and brought him to shore. Despite desperate resuscitation efforts by loved ones and emergency responders, Wyatt could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Coroner Fowler stated that preliminary findings indicate Wyatt may have exited the house through an open window before the tragic accident occurred. An autopsy was scheduled for Friday as part of the ongoing investigation into the heartbreaking incident.
