The community of Ames, Iowa, is mourning the tragic loss of Tristan Kyle Nelson, 37, who lost his life in a devastating crash in Boone County on Monday, June 15.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. on 190th Street, about seven miles northeast of Boone. Tristan was a passenger in a 2022 Jeep Compass traveling westbound when the vehicle entered the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a 2020 Kenworth semi-truck.
The impact of the crash was severe. The Jeep came to rest on its driver’s side in the south ditch, while the semi-truck jackknifed across the roadway, blocking both lanes of traffic. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, but despite their efforts, Tristan was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the Jeep, 34-year-old Bailey Jo Craven of Des Moines, was transported by LifeFlight helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines for treatment. Authorities reported that both occupants of the Jeep were wearing their seat belts at the time of the collision.
