The Columbia community is mourning the tragic loss of Qwa’Maurie A. Deaver, an 18-year-old whose life ended during a violent overnight series of events that culminated in a fatal exchange of gunfire involving deputies from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
According to the Richland County Coroner’s Office, Deaver was identified as the individual who died following the incident in the Summit Ridge Drive area during the early morning hours of Thursday. His death has deeply affected family members, friends, classmates, and members of the Columbia community who are now grappling with an unexpected and devastating loss.
Authorities report that the sequence of events began shortly after midnight when deputies responded to reports of shots fired in the 200 block of Sagamare Road. Although no injuries were reported at that location, investigators found that gunfire had struck a residence and multiple vehicles, indicating a dangerous situation had unfolded in a residential area.
Less than two hours later, deputies responded to another shooting in the 400 block of Spring Oak Drive, where a home had also been struck by gunfire. Investigators believe the incidents are connected as they worked to determine those responsible for the escalating violence.
K9 Specialist Zaid Abdullah and K9 Jet were deployed to assist in the investigation. After detecting a scent in a backyard, Abdullah, K9 Specialist Samantha Ramirez, and Master Deputy Nicolas Carroll followed the K9 track for approximately 30 minutes. The trail ultimately led deputies to a residence in the 300 block of Legend Oaks around 2:20 a.m.
As deputies approached the location, they identified themselves and issued commands. According to authorities, multiple individuals outside the home then opened fire using rifles and pistols. Deputies immediately took cover and returned fire as shots continued from several directions.
The exchange of gunfire continued until additional law enforcement units arrived and secured the area. When the scene was brought under control, one individual had been detained and another was found deceased. The Richland County Coroner’s Office later identified the deceased as Qwa’Maurie A. Deaver of Columbia.

Residents in the Fox Grove Circle, Royce Court, Summit Ridge, and Bombing Ridge areas have been asked to assist by providing any Ring camera footage or information that could help investigators piece together what occurred.
Sheriff Leon Lott addressed the public during a Thursday press conference, where he also shared body camera footage related to the incident involving deputies. Authorities emphasized that the investigation is active and ongoing as detectives continue to analyze evidence and witness statements.
