Morgan County — The community is mourning the tragic loss of 69-year-old Pamela Hampton of Martinsville, who died following a fatal two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Road 142 and Wilbur Road. Her passing has left family, friends, and neighbors grieving a sudden and heartbreaking loss.
According to the Morgan County Serious Crash Investigation Team (SCIT), the crash occurred just before 10:00 a.m. when deputies responded to reports of a serious injury collision involving a 2013 GMC pickup truck and a 2001 Honda Accord. Investigators stated that Pamela Hampton was traveling northbound on Wilbur Road when her vehicle entered the intersection and was struck by an eastbound pickup truck on SR 142.
Authorities said the driver of the pickup truck, 20-year-old Andrew Wehrling of Mooresville, attempted to avoid the collision, but the impact occurred on the driver’s side of Hampton’s vehicle. Emergency responders arrived quickly and provided life-saving measures at the scene, but Pamela Hampton was pronounced deceased due to the severity of her injuries. She was the only occupant in her vehicle.
Officials also confirmed that a K-9 inside the vehicle was safely transported to a veterinary clinic for evaluation following the crash. Wehrling and his passenger were not injured and cooperated with investigators, including submitting to required testing as part of the standard procedure.
The intersection was closed for approximately three hours as investigators documented the scene, reviewed evidence, and worked to reconstruct the events leading up to the collision. The Morgan County SCIT continues to examine all contributing factors, including roadway conditions and right-of-way circumstances.
While investigators work to fully determine how the crash occurred, the focus for many remains on the life that was lost. Pamela Hampton is being remembered by those who knew her as a cherished member of the Martinsville community whose presence will be deeply missed.
Her sudden passing serves as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can change on the roadway, leaving families and loved ones to cope with unexpected grief. As the investigation continues, officials have extended their condolences to the Hampton family during this difficult time.
May Pamela Hampton be remembered with love and respect, and may those grieving her loss find comfort in the support of family, friends, and their community as they navigate the days ahead.
