MACON, Ga. — Robert Jackson, 36, was killed Monday morning after a crash involving a utility truck and a commercial Peterbilt truck on Bass Road in Macon, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.
Authorities say the collision occurred near the Snows Memorial Chapel funeral home in the 1400 block of Bass Road, prompting a significant emergency response and the temporary closure of the roadway as investigators worked to determine exactly what happened.
Jackson was driving a Chevrolet GMT 3500 utility truck at the time of the crash. According to preliminary findings released by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, he was traveling on Bass Road when he attempted to avoid colliding with a red sedan that was stopped and waiting to make a turn onto Westchester Drive.
Investigators say Jackson maneuvered into the lane of oncoming traffic in an effort to avoid striking the sedan. However, while traveling in the opposite lane, his utility truck collided head-on with a Peterbilt 358 commercial vehicle that was heading eastbound on Bass Road.
The impact of the collision was severe. Authorities report that the crash caused the utility truck to overturn, leaving extensive damage to both vehicles and resulting in fatal injuries to Jackson.
Deputy Coroner Luann Stone responded to the scene and pronounced Jackson dead at the site of the crash. His death has left family members, friends, and members of the community mourning a life lost far too soon in a sudden and devastating accident.
The driver of the Peterbilt truck, a 62-year-old man whose name has not been released, sustained injuries in the collision. Emergency medical personnel treated him at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital for further evaluation and care. According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, the truck driver was reported to be in stable condition following the crash.
The accident led to significant traffic disruptions throughout the morning as emergency crews, investigators, and recovery teams worked at the scene. Both directions of Bass Road remained closed for several hours before reopening shortly after noon.
Investigators continue to piece together the sequence of events that led to the fatal collision. While preliminary information suggests Jackson entered the opposing lane in an attempt to avoid the stopped sedan, officials have emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has information that could assist investigators is encouraged to contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 and ask to speak with a fatality investigator.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine all factors that contributed to the tragic crash that claimed the life of Robert Jackson on Bass Road Monday morning.
