JASPER COUNTY, Texas — A devastating crash on U.S. Highway 96 has left a Texas community grieving after a fatal two-vehicle collision claimed the lives of 79-year-old Carolyn Brewster and 66-year-old James Pedigo, and left another person seriously injured on Monday afternoon, May 25, 2026.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has confirmed additional details surrounding the tragic incident that unfolded just south of Jasper near County Road 296, an event that brought emergency responders, law enforcement, and medical teams rushing to the scene in an urgent attempt to save lives.

According to DPS, the crash occurred at approximately 1:58 p.m. when a northbound Volkswagen SUV reportedly crossed into the southbound lane of traffic for reasons still under investigation. The vehicle collided head-on with a Dodge pickup truck, resulting in catastrophic damage and immediate life-threatening consequences.

Authorities confirmed that the driver of the Volkswagen SUV, identified as Carolyn Brewster, was pronounced deceased at the scene by a Justice of the Peace. Her passing marks a sudden and heartbreaking loss, leaving behind unanswered questions and grieving loved ones.

In the Dodge pickup, the driver, identified as Debra Pedigo of Weatherford, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by emergency medical services to CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont for urgent treatment.
