Authorities in Belhaven, North Carolina are investigating a homicide that claimed the life of 55 year old Lemonte Crandall following a shooting in the community.
According to Belhaven Police, officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Elm Street at approximately 8 p.m. yesterday after receiving multiple calls reporting gunshots in the area. When officers arrived on scene, they located a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds.
The victim was identified as 55 year old Lemonte Crandall. Despite emergency response efforts, Crandall was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Following the discovery, officers with the Belhaven Police Department immediately secured the area and established a perimeter as they began processing evidence. Deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist in securing the scene and supporting initial investigative efforts.
Due to the seriousness of the case, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been requested to assist local authorities. SBI agents are now working alongside Belhaven police and county deputies to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and reconstruct the events leading up to the shooting.
Investigators say the incident is believed to be isolated, and at this time there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the public. However, authorities have not released information regarding possible suspects or a motive, as the investigation remains active and in its early stages.
Law enforcement officials are continuing to canvas the area and follow up on leads as they work to determine exactly what led to the shooting on Elm Street.
