The Hammond community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Patricia Shepard, a 50-year-old woman whose life was senselessly cut short in a tragic act of violence during the early morning hours of Thursday. What should have been a routine ride home from work ended in unimaginable tragedy, leaving family, friends, and an entire community grieving the loss of a woman authorities describe as a completely innocent victim.
According to the Hammond Police Department, officers responded to a Chevron gas station located along Highway 190 near Westin Oak Drive at approximately 1:15 a.m. after reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered Patricia Shepard suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside a parked gray sedan at a gas pump. Despite all efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say the attack was both shocking and deliberate. Surveillance footage revealed that a white sedan pulled alongside the gray vehicle where Shepard was seated. Two suspects exited the white vehicle and unleashed a barrage of gunfire, firing an estimated 70 to 80 rounds into the car before fleeing the area at high speed. The suspects were later seen traveling westbound toward Interstate 55.
As detectives pieced together the events leading up to the shooting, a devastating reality emerged: Patricia Shepard was not the intended target.
Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. stated that investigators believe the suspects had been stalking the vehicle and were attempting to target another individual. Authorities say the person they were actually seeking had already exited the vehicle before the shooting occurred. Tragically, Shepard remained inside the car, unaware of the danger that was about to unfold.
“The lady in the car, Ms. Patricia, who has lost her life, was an absolutely innocent victim in this,” Bergeron said.
Police explained that Shepard had simply been receiving a ride home from work when she became caught in a deadly chain of events beyond her control. Her death serves as a painful reminder of how quickly violence can shatter lives and forever alter families.
Chief Bergeron described the incident as a case of mistaken identity, noting that Shepard was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Those words offer little comfort to loved ones who must now face the painful reality of life without her.
As news of the shooting spread, community members expressed shock and sadness. Many were disturbed by the sheer volume of gunfire involved in the attack. Witnesses and nearby workers struggled to comprehend how such a violent act could occur in a public location.
Among them was Terrence Selders, who works near the crime scene and reflected on how easily he could have been present when the shooting occurred. His reaction echoed the concerns of many residents who now find themselves grappling with fears about public safety and the growing impact of violent crime.
Investigators have since learned that the suspects’ vehicle had been stolen during a carjacking in McComb, Mississippi, two days before the shooting. Detectives traveled to Mississippi as part of a coordinated effort to track down those responsible and continue building their case.
While authorities believe they have identified potential motives connected to the intended target, they have not publicly released further details as the investigation remains active.
Chief Bergeron spoke passionately about the devastating consequences of violent crime, expressing frustration over individuals who continue to terrorize communities and destroy innocent lives. His comments reflected the grief and anger felt by many who are struggling to understand why a hardworking woman lost her life in such a senseless manner.
Today, family members, friends, coworkers, and community members remember Patricia Shepard not for the violence that claimed her life, but for the life she lived. Though details about her personal story continue to emerge, one fact remains undeniable: she was an innocent woman whose future was stolen in an act of brutality she neither caused nor deserved.
Her death leaves behind unanswered questions, shattered hearts, and a community determined to see justice served.
As detectives continue their investigation, authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Even the smallest detail could help identify those responsible and bring accountability for a crime that has left a family grieving and a city searching for answers.
In this time of sorrow, the thoughts and prayers of many are with Patricia Shepard’s loved ones. May her memory be a source of strength, may justice be achieved in her name, and may her life never be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Patricia Shepard. Your life mattered, your memory will endure, and your loss will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved you.
