With profound sadness, we remember the lives of Andrea Stawny, 19, and Sofie Stawny, 17, whose lives were tragically lost following the heartbreaking incident at Lake Springfield on Sunday, June 14. Their passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of their family, friends, and the entire Springfield community.
According to the Springfield Police Department, Andrea and Sofie were among four family members involved in the tragic incident near the Lake Springfield dam. Authorities identified the others as 40-year-old Taylor Stawny, who remains missing as search efforts continue, and 12-year-old Aurelie Stawny, who was rescued from the waters below the spillway, transported to a hospital for treatment, and has since been released.
Following an extensive search-and-recovery operation, Andrea was recovered on Tuesday approximately one-quarter mile downstream from the dam. Sofie was located near the dam on Wednesday after emergency crews continued their coordinated efforts. More than 40 rescuers from multiple local and state agencies have remained committed to the search for Taylor Stawny, utilizing resources on land, in the water, and from the air.
Investigators reported that the four family members were together in a kayak and two connected inflatable tubes at the time of the incident. While authorities continue working to determine exactly what occurred, the focus for many has turned to remembering two young lives that ended far too soon.
Andrea and Sofie will be remembered not for the tragedy that claimed them, but for the love they shared with those around them and the memories they created with family and friends.
