INDIANAPOLIS — June 7, 2026 — A tragic hit-and-run crash on the city’s near south side has claimed the life of 50-year-old Earl Scruggs, leaving family members and the community mourning his sudden and heartbreaking loss.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), officers were dispatched around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday night to the area of East Raymond Street and the southbound off-ramp of Interstate 65 after receiving reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man lying injured in the roadway after being hit by a vehicle. Despite life-saving efforts by medical staff, Scruggs later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office has since identified the victim as Earl Scruggs, 50.
Investigators say the driver involved in the collision did not remain at the scene and fled immediately following the crash. The hit-and-run has intensified the urgency of the investigation, as authorities work to determine the identity of the vehicle and the circumstances leading up to the fatal impact.
IMPD crash reconstruction specialists and certified investigators are actively leading the case, carefully reviewing evidence from the scene, surveillance footage from nearby roadways, and any available witness statements in hopes of tracking down the suspect vehicle.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has information about the driver who fled the scene to come forward. Even the smallest detail, investigators say, could be critical in solving the case and bringing accountability to those responsible.
