The Nanjemoy community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of James Thomas Claggett, whose life was tragically cut short following a devastating motor vehicle collision late Monday night, June 15, 2026. At just 19 years old, James’s passing has left family members, friends, and loved ones grieving the loss of a young man whose life ended far too soon.
According to the Maryland State Police, troopers from the La Plata Barrack, along with deputies from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, responded at approximately 11:21 p.m. to Maryland Route 224 (Riverside Road) near Wilson Landing Road following reports of a serious crash involving two minibikes. Due to the severity of the incident, Advanced Collision Investigator TFC Ashley Sabock responded to assume responsibility for the investigation.
Preliminary findings indicate that a 2021 minibike operated by a 16-year-old male from Nanjemoy was traveling southbound on Maryland Route 224 when it collided head-on with a 2018 minibike operated by James Thomas Claggett. The impact of the collision caused catastrophic injuries to both riders.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and worked quickly to provide aid. The 16-year-old rider was airlifted by Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 7 to Capital Region Hospital in serious condition. James was airlifted by MSPAC Trooper 2 to MedStar Washington Hospital Center for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators reported that neither operator was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Authorities also noted that the minibikes involved were unregistered and were not equipped with headlamps necessary for roadway illumination and visibility.
