GRAYVILLE, Illinois — Authorities are conducting a death investigation after a man was found deceased inside an SUV parked at the Road Ranger Truck Stop in Grayville. Officials have now identified the victim as Mark Willoughby of Evansville, Indiana, and say the preliminary manner of death has been ruled as suicide pending final confirmation from the coroner’s office.
According to investigators, the discovery was made after a customer at the truck stop noticed the vehicle had remained parked in the same location for an extended period of time, reportedly more than a week. Concerned about the unattended SUV, staff and law enforcement were notified, leading to a response from local authorities.
Officers with the Grayville City Police Department and the White County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the scene on Thursday afternoon, where they secured the area and established a perimeter using crime scene tape. The parking area was temporarily closed off while investigators began their initial assessment.
White County Coroner Chris Marsh confirmed that Mark Willoughby was found deceased inside the SUV. Officials stated that, based on preliminary findings, the death is being investigated as a suicide; however, authorities emphasized that all standard investigative procedures are being followed until the examination is complete.
Due to the circumstances, an Illinois State Police crime scene investigator has been requested to assist in the case. The involvement of the specialized unit is expected to help further document the scene and support the ongoing review by local authorities.
Mark Willoughby’s body has been transported for further examination, where additional testing will assist in confirming the final cause and manner of death. Officials have not released further details at this time as the investigation remains active.
Law enforcement agencies are continuing to review the timeline leading up to the discovery and are asking anyone who may have noticed unusual activity in the area of the truck stop over the past several days to contact authorities.
