ASHLAND, Neb. — The Saunders County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that 67-year-old Robert Haswell Sr. was killed in a shooting allegedly involving 31-year-old Robert Haswell Jr. in Ashland, Nebraska, in an incident that ended with the suspect being taken into custody following phone negotiations with law enforcement.
According to officials, at approximately 4:34 p.m., the Saunders County 9-1-1 Center received a call reporting a shooting in the 1700 block of Dawes Street. The initial report prompted an immediate emergency response from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Ashland Police Department and supporting regional partners.
As the situation developed, dispatchers and responding officers engaged in real-time communication with both the caller and the suspected shooter. Authorities say that through negotiation efforts conducted over the phone, officers were able to de-escalate the situation and persuade the suspect to exit the residence unarmed.
Shortly thereafter, the suspect complied with commands and came outside, where he was safely taken into custody without further incident by Ashland Police Officers. Officials credited the coordinated response and communication efforts for preventing additional harm.
The suspect has been identified as 31-year-old Robert Haswell Jr. He was arrested and formally charged with First-Degree Murder and Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony. Following his arrest, he was booked into Saunders County Corrections pending further legal proceedings.
Inside the residence, officers located the victim, identified as 67-year-old Robert Haswell Sr., who had sustained at least one gunshot wound. Despite emergency response efforts, Haswell Sr. was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities have confirmed that next of kin have been notified of the fatal outcome.
The Saunders County Sheriff’s Office, Ashland Police Department, and Nebraska State Patrol are jointly involved in the ongoing investigation. Officials have also confirmed that Ashland Fire and Rescue provided assistance at the scene during the emergency response.
While investigators continue to gather evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, officials have not released further details regarding a possible motive. The relationship between the suspect and victim has been identified as familial.
Sheriff Chris Lichtenberg expressed condolences on behalf of the Saunders County Sheriff’s Office, stating that the agency’s thoughts and prayers are with the family affected by this tragic incident.
