A Schuylkill County community is mourning the tragic loss of Austin J. Didgen, 31, of Barnesville, who died Sunday evening after a devastating pedestrian crash in Rush Township, Pennsylvania.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the incident occurred around 6:01 p.m. on May 31, 2026, in the 200 block of Grier Avenue. Authorities reported that Didgen had entered the roadway when he was struck by a northbound vehicle. Investigators stated that the front driver’s side of the vehicle made contact with the pedestrian, resulting in severe injuries.

Emergency responders quickly arrived on scene and provided urgent medical assistance before transporting Didgen to St. Luke’s Miners Memorial Hospital. Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 22-year-old Erick M. Chavez of Freeland, was not injured in the collision. Police noted that the vehicle involved, a 2020 Honda Civic, sustained minor and operable damage to the front driver’s side. As of the latest update, authorities have confirmed that no charges have been filed in connection with the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing and is being handled by Pennsylvania State Police Troop L, Jonestown Station. Specialized units, including the Troop L Forensic Services Unit and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit, assisted investigators in examining the scene and gathering evidence to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Several emergency response teams also played a critical role at the scene, including Ryan Township EMS, Tamaqua EMS, MEDEVAC 4, and local fire department personnel who worked together in an effort to provide rapid medical care and secure the area.

As the investigation continues, friends, family, and members of the Schuylkill County community are left grappling with the sudden and heartbreaking loss of a young man taken too soon. Those who knew Austin are remembering him as a son, a loved one, and a part of their community whose absence will be deeply felt.
