ATLANTA, Ga.— The victim and suspect in a fatal stabbing on a MARTA train were identified Sunday by authorities as 66-year-old Margaret Swan of Atlanta, Georgia, and 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews, who is now facing murder charges in connection with Saturday’s deadly incident.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the identity of the victim as Margaret Swan, while MARTA police identified the suspect as John Elijah Matthews following the fatal stabbing that took place on the transit system operated by Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority.
The violent incident, which occurred in broad daylight, has left many riders shaken and questioning their sense of safety while using public transportation. Some commuters expressed uneasiness in the aftermath, saying the event has heightened concerns about security across the MARTA system.
“I would say it doesn’t feel as safe as it should be. There is a little cause for concern,” one rider named Venus told Atlanta News First.
Another rider, Djimon Tabannah, said the city’s growing population and increased ridership mean more attention must be given to safety concerns and enforcement.
“You know, we’re getting a lot of tourists, a lot of people moving in from places like Florida and a lot of places,” he said, suggesting that MARTA should increase security presence. “Be more attentive and more strict on who you let in here. Because we’re all paying customers, we all live here. And we’re supposed to protect each other as a community.”
The stabbing comes amid a series of recent violent incidents on the transit system. Just last week, a man was stabbed multiple times at the Georgia State MARTA station and is currently recovering. In April, a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed at the Oakland City MARTA Station, the same location connected to Saturday’s fatal stabbing.
While MARTA statistics indicate that overall crime on the system has decreased, riders say those figures do not always reflect their lived experience or sense of security.
In a statement provided to Atlanta News First, MARTA acknowledged public concern following the incident and described the stabbing as an isolated act of violence.
“This appears to be a senseless act of violence, and our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones and those who witnessed this horrific incident,” the agency said. “We understand the concern and fear incidents like this can cause for those who ride and work on the MARTA system. MARTA Police are actively investigating and remain committed to the safety and security of our riders and employees.”
Authorities confirmed that the suspect’s identity has been released, and the investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement works to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
This remains a developing story. More updates are expected as investigators continue their work and additional information becomes available.
