LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio — Authorities are investigating a fatal crash on the Ohio Turnpike that left Najalee N. Rivera, 28, of Lorain, Ohio, deceased, and resulted in injuries to three juvenile passengers, a 7-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old girl, all of Lorain. The crash remains under active investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
According to the Milan Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on June 19 at approximately 11:54 a.m. in Elyria Township, Lorain County, along the eastbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike near milepost 146.3.
Preliminary findings indicate that Rivera was operating a Toyota RAV4 traveling eastbound when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway. The SUV then struck a guardrail before overturning, coming to rest off the roadway.
Authorities confirmed that Rivera was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Three juvenile passengers were also inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. The passengers included a 7-year-old male, an 8-year-old female, and a 4-year-old female, all from Lorain, Ohio. Despite the severity of the rollover crash, officials reported that the children sustained non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported by LifeCare Ambulance to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center for treatment and evaluation.
Emergency responders closed the eastbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike for approximately three hours while crews worked to assist victims, document the scene, and clear the wreckage from the roadway. Traffic was diverted during the closure as investigators conducted a detailed examination of the crash site.
Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Elyria Township Fire Department, the Lorain County Coroner’s Office, the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, and Rich’s Towing, working alongside the Ohio State Highway Patrol to manage the emergency response and recovery operations.
Investigators have not yet released additional details regarding what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway, and it remains unclear whether any other factors contributed to the crash. Authorities continue to gather evidence, review roadway conditions, and reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and further updates may be released once additional information becomes available.
This incident serves as another reminder of the importance of seat belt use and safe driving practices, particularly on high-speed roadways such as the Ohio Turnpike.
Officials encourage anyone with information related to the crash to contact investigators as the case remains active.
