HICKORY, N.C. — A tragic late-evening collision has claimed the life of 32-year-old Levi Scovern, a Hickory resident who died following a motorcycle crash on Thursday, June 18, 2026, according to the Hickory Police Department.
Authorities said the fatal crash occurred at approximately 7:55 p.m. on 13th Avenue Drive SE when a 2021 Kawasaki motorcycle operated by Scovern was traveling westbound in the area near a local hotel entrance. At the same time, a 2025 MINI Cooper was exiting the parking lot of the Hampton Inn and turning left onto 13th Avenue Drive SE, also heading west.
Investigators report that as the MINI Cooper merged onto the roadway, the motorcycle struck the rear of the vehicle. The impact caused severe injuries to Scovern, who was quickly transported to Frye Regional Medical Center for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced deceased.
Officials confirmed that Scovern was the only occupant of the motorcycle at the time of the crash. The driver of the MINI Cooper remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement during the investigation.
The Hickory Police Department stated that early findings from the crash investigation indicate that excessive speed by the motorcycle was a contributing factor in the collision.
