COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa / Pottawattamie County — A tragic early morning crash on Interstate 880 has claimed the life of 31-year-old Dillon Michael Wood, a Harlan man who died after being ejected from his vehicle during a rollover crash on Tuesday, June 17, 2026.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the fatal incident occurred at approximately 8:09 a.m. when authorities were dispatched to a single-vehicle rollover crash with reported ejection along I-880 near the 9.6-mile marker in Pottawattamie County. Emergency responders arrived to find a severely damaged vehicle resting off the roadway in the north ditch.
Investigators said Wood was traveling westbound at the time of the crash when, for reasons still unknown, his vehicle left the roadway. The vehicle then entered the north ditch and overturned, resulting in Wood being ejected from the vehicle. Authorities confirmed that he was the sole occupant at the time of the crash.
Despite rapid response from emergency personnel, Wood sustained fatal injuries as a result of the violent impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Iowa State Patrol noted that the exact cause of the vehicle leaving the roadway remains under investigation. Officials have not yet determined whether factors such as speed, road conditions, mechanical failure, or driver impairment played a role in the crash.
The crash temporarily drew the attention of local emergency services and law enforcement, as the area was secured for investigation and traffic control. Crews worked the scene for an extended period while crash reconstruction teams documented evidence to help determine the sequence of events leading up to the rollover.
Authorities confirmed that Wood was the only person inside the vehicle, and no other vehicles were reported to be involved in the incident.
The loss of a young life in such sudden and violent circumstances has left a deep sense of grief among family, friends, and the Harlan community. As investigators continue to piece together the details, loved ones are left mourning a life cut short on an ordinary morning that turned tragic in seconds.
The Iowa State Patrol has not released additional information at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
